February jobs in the Herb Garden

As temperatures rise towards the end of the month (really it will !)  herbs growing in containers will benefit from a top dressing.  Remove the top 3 – 4 inches of compost and replace with a well mixture on well rotted garden compost and leaf mould or green waste compost. Finishing off with a layer of  grit or gravel will improve the appearance and help retain moisture in dry spells (remember them?)

Herbaceous herbs may start emerging late Feb / early March, and can be helped by mulching with garden compost.

This is also a good time to cast your eyes over your herb garden to see where the bare patches are.  Plans can be made to fill these  with suitable varieties of your choice as soon as conditions are suitable.
